The last post was about the hurdle many care workers with a non-German mother tongue know well: not everyday German, but the technical language. Today is about how we turned that into an app – and which decisions life on the ward demanded of us.
The most important decision: offline
On many wards there’s no Wi-Fi. Or the signal is poor, or the phone is in flight mode. For an app meant to help in the very moment a technical word is missing, that isn’t a side condition – it decides everything.
So it was clear early on: PflegeMate has to run fully offline. All terms, all example sentences, all audio recordings – instantly, with no loading time, no “no connection.” For us that wasn’t a technical option to retrofit later, but a design duty.
What the app offers
PflegeMate is built around what’s genuinely needed in the first months on the job:
- 412 German nursing terms, explained in your mother tongue – currently in 10 languages: Chinese, Polish, Turkish, Croatian/Serbian, Romanian, English, Ukrainian, Arabic, Spanish and French.
- Audio pronunciation for every term, professionally recorded – so you don’t just read the word but can say it with confidence.
- Example sentences for the real situations: patient conversations, handovers with colleagues, doctors’ rounds.
- Personal notes and favourites, plus fully customisable – add your own terms and categories, edit translations, add your own images.
- Ad-free, no registration, GDPR-compliant – what happens on the device stays on the device.
The terms are sorted into everyday categories: personal care and hygiene, medical equipment, medication, anatomy, symptoms, care tasks, documentation, emergencies, mobility and transfer, and nutrition and elimination.
An honest limit
As useful as the app is day to day, we’re clear about what it isn’t. PflegeMate is only a language-learning aid. It replaces neither professional language training, nor medical expertise, nor the onboarding your own employer provides. That honest framing sits deliberately inside the app itself, too.
Who we built it for
PflegeMate is aimed at international care workers in their first months in Germany, at newly hired colleagues from abroad, at trainees with a migration background and professionals after recognition – and at institutions that want to support their language onboarding.
As with all our apps, the same principle holds: no pressure, no exposure, no obstacle between a person and help. Just a reliable companion that’s there when you need it – even without Wi-Fi.
